6.23.19 Sunday School Horror Stories: Noah & the Ark
Monday Jul 29, 2019
Monday Jul 29, 2019
Join us this summer as we revisit those classic bible stories adults love to tell to children: David & Goliath, Jonah & the Whale, Noah’s Ark, and more. We love to tell these stories to kids because they feature children and/or animals, but on closer examination, these stories are MESSED UP.
Child soldiers, whales who swallow people whole, and (let’s face it) God’s genocide of basically the entire planet. We’ll revisit these stories with a more critical lens and discover that while the horror is real, so is the grace, beauty, and love of God.
THIS WEEK: We love telling this one to kids because.... animals!
We tend to gloss over the implications of God's intentional destruction of the known world and all but a handful of humans and those cute fuzzy animals. We leave out altogether the part where angels and humans were getting it on and giving birth to giants (google "Nephilim." it's cool. we'll wait.)
Still, this story has much to teach us about making sense of chaos and destruction, trusting in the promise of God's protection, and how to reconcile the truth of God's love with a messy, violent bible.

THIS WEEK: Adam and Eve is a totally chill, normal story about nudity, the origins of evil, and a trickster talking snake with legs. If that wasn't enough horror for you, we'll dive into the centuries of abusive theology that uses this story (incorrectly) to promote misogyny, heterosexism, transphobia, anti-science/7 day creationism.
.
Is there anything beautiful and redemptive about the creation story? Absolutely. We'll reclaim the beauty of God's artistic hand, the truth about gender and body expression, and the power of myth to speak truth.

Come and hear of the God who calls us back home to love and celebration, who seeks us out when we have forgotten our own worth, and who finds every last one of those of us who have been forgotten.

The name "Zao" is a greek word that means "to be among the living".
This season, we are highlighting the ways that Zao as a community joins Jesus and the tradition of Jesus followers in seeking the fullness of life.
Our world is a mixture of creative, vibrant, beautiful life, alongside systems of death, destruction and oppression. At Zao, we look to Jesus and one another to fully seek life and dismantle the mechanisms of death that plague us as individuals, communities, and the world.

2.24.19 Discipline: Confess and Be Forgiven
Saturday Jun 08, 2019
Saturday Jun 08, 2019
Start the new year off right with Zao's series Discipline.
We'll be talking spiritual disciplines (sometimes called spiritual practices or habits). We all know we need to be intentional about our physical health, but how much intention do we bring to our spiritual health? Over the next two months, we'll discuss, learn about, and practice the spiritual habits that can help us throughout the coming year!
